Environment : Città di Ghiaccio

(sorry for the wall of text to follow)
-
The Città di Ghiaccio ‘City of Ice’ was a subterranean fortress carved into the ice of the Marmolada glacier by the Austrian forces fighting on the Italian front of WW1. Events of the war itself as well as the slow thawing of the glacier have since seen to the complete collapse of the ‘city’. Today, all that we know of the ‘city’ stems from relatively limited first-hand records, a handful of photographic resources, and what few materials are being revealed as global warming continues to eat away at the glacier.
-
My aim with this project then was to piece together an informed 3d environment inside of UE4 to visualize what one of the tunnels within the ‘city of ice’ might have looked like.
-
Please note that the piece is not intended to be a 1:1 recreation and as such, some liberties have been taken to improve the visual appeal of the piece.

If you’re interested in reading a bit more into the research behind this project, you can find my research paper here (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Q9kmUZZF44CejpQV7k9hpyVaUkDVSqF6/view?usp=sharing)

Please note that although I have done my utmost to formulate as comprehensive of an understanding on the city of ice as I can manage, I am at the end of the day, a game developer, and so my research is very likely to be less credible than someone who actually knows what they’re talking about. I encourage you to look further into the topic if this sparks your interest.

As a note, while I generated most of the key assets myself (building faces, signs, wooden beams/ scaffolding set, concrete flooring, and glacial ice materials), many of the set-dressing props, as well as the pipes, have been sourced from the Quixel Megascan collection.
